Dear Mr. Carmichael:
Thank you for your recent letter requesting that the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) delete the social security numbers from your driving record. I appreciate the opportunity to respond.
Our records show that you obtained a DMV-issued customer number in 1995. This number is displayed on your DMV documents. However, our records show that you provided DMV with a social security number (SSN) when you originally applied for your driver's license. Therefore, the SSN must remain on your customer record unless we are provided with a statement fro the Social Security Administration or a court order stating that the SSN does not belong to you, nor has ever been associated with you.
I do not have the discretionary authority to remove your SSN from your driving record. I cannot provide you with specific information regarding your wife, as we were not provided with her name and date of birth.
Regarding your request to cancel your driver's license if we could not remove the SSN from your record, our records show that your license expired on December 31, 2001. Should you have any additional questions or concerns regarding this matter, you may contact Mr. Jim Davidson at the letterhead address, call him at (804) 367-0379, or by e-mail at dmvj3d@dmv.state.va.us.
I regret that my response cannot be more favorable, but am glad to provide you with this information.
Sincerely,
Asbury W. Quillian
